Charlestown

Community engagement and strategic communications

Case study

Client.

Uniting Church

Services.

Description.

Uniting was planning to expand its existing retirement and independent living community in Charlestown.

As a State Significant Development (SSD), the project required a structured engagement program to support the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure approvals process. Mara was engaged to deliver community and stakeholder consultation and a SIA.

Engagement approach.

The approach was designed to surface key issues early, manage approval risk and provide clear evidence of how community and stakeholder feedback shaped the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

Engagement was structured to provide multiple, accessible ways to participate, ensuring people could engage in a way that suited them. This resulted in meaningful input from around 700 local residents and businesses, strengthening the assessment and demonstrating a transparent and responsive process.

The engagement supported a smooth SSD approvals process.

SSD and SEARS requirements met with consulting supporting the EIS, Feedback informed design and mitigation measures, Strong reach and participation
