Wamberal Beach Coastal Protection

Stakeholder engagement and strategic communication

Case study

Client.

Central Coast Council

Services.

Description.

Wamberal Beach is one of NSW’s highest-risk coastal erosion sites. Severe storms have repeatedly damaged homes, public spaces and infrastructure. Following major impacts in 2020, Central Coast Council and the Wamberal Seawall Advisory Taskforce sought community input on long-term coastal protection and sand nourishment options.

Engagement approach.

An evidence-based engagement program combined digital and in-person methods to support informed participation on a complex and emotive issue.

Key elements included a communications and stakeholder engagement strategy aligned with Council’s engagement framework supported by stakeholder mapping and targeted briefings. Delivery included online information sessions, surveys via Social Pinpoint, clear communication of negotiables and non-negotiables, and accessible reporting with feedback loops.

Comprehensive engagement outcomes report informed Council’s next design phase and strengthened confidence in the process, ensuring community voices directly informed future coastal management at Wamberal Beach.
